|THE SUMMER SCHOOL IN SUSTAINABLE BLUE GROWTH WILL BE HELD IN TRIESTE, ITALY ON JULY 14-18, 2014
The Summer School in Sustainable Blue Growth will be held in Trieste, Italy on July 14-18, 2014 Taking into consideration the current economic situation, there is a need for new skills to enable multidisciplinary and integrated approaches, for generating innovation, advanced sciences and competitive technologies. The aim of the school is two fold:
1) to increase the professional skills and the quality of research in the field of marine sciences, climate related aspects, environmental protection and integrated management of coastal areas;
2) to increase the educational offer to extend the current economic development and growth, with particular focus on activities and aspects related to the sea.
The EU Blue Growth Initiative is a long-term strategy to support growth in the maritime sector as a whole by harnessing the untapped potential of Europe's oceans, seasand coasts for jobs and growth. Establishing appropriate training and mobility opportunities for a new generation of marine scientists which possess both cross and transdisciplinary skills represents an important part of this strategy. We intend to support the creation of stable and attractive career pathways and the highly skilled talents that will be needed to support expanding marine and maritime sectors. The challenging questions for marine sciences in this century revolve around systems and their interactions, and address scenarios that include the role of people, economics and policies. Tackling climate change, understanding ecosystem function, managing sustainability: all of these require a much more extended mindset than was typical even a decade ago.
In this context, together with the Robert Bosch Stiftung Foundation and other partner-institutions i.e. the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP),the Central European Initiative (CEI) and the University of Trieste, the University of Udine, OGS is organizing a one-week training school in Trieste for researchers, scientists and managers from South East Europe. The focus of the Summer School is on strengthening professional skills in the field of oceanography, marine sciences and blue growth.
The training is addressed to participants from South East Europe: namely Albania, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and Ukraine. Participants from Italy and Germany will be also invited to participate.
No registration fees are required.
Applications supported by the candidate's home Institution are recommended and will be taken in particular consideration. Selected candidates will be granted fellowships covering their expenses for travel and accommodation.
Candidates not requesting fellowships will be also evaluated for admission and invited to participate in case of successful application. Applications must be sent before Monday June the 2nd 2014.
The Summer School will represent a first step of a broader programme with the aim of increasing an educational offer focussed on activities and aspects related to the sea and supporting economic development and growth, also enhancing collaborations among Countries from South East Europe.
We hope that you will plan to attend and will encourage others to do so.
You are kindly invited to contact Mr. Mounir Ghribi (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Ms. Giorgia Rivoira (email@example.com) at OGS, Office of Research Promotion and International Cooperation, for any additional information please visit http://www.ogs.trieste.it

|STUDENTS FROM THE STUDENT CENTRE PASSED THE HARDEST EXAM|
Students of the University of Zenica located at Student Centre, in the several previous days (15th May-25th May 2014.) passed the biggest and hardest exam, exam of humanity. The exam was complex and demanding, with a short (almost none) time for preparation, and it was composed of several integral parts: organization of work, communication, health care, hygienic and epidemiological protection, culinary, IT, security, social education, preschool education, and finally friendship. Crkvicko hill, location very close to the dormitory, was the place where helicopters continuously landed with people endangered with floods and landslides. They were accepted by students and with ambulance cars transported to the Student Centre, as the nearest shelter.
Some of the photos may be seen here
The people were evacuated from the most endangered areas of Zenica-Doboj Canton ( Željezno Polje, Kolići, Šerići...). There were women in tears and injured men, fifteen-day old babies and 83 years old men, healthy and chronically ill people... They were all accommodated, medically cared for, fed and given to drink, guarded and cherished, given the psychological and any other assistance, from walking their children to feeding babies and organizing games and place for children. There was also organized transport of food, clothing and shoes, blankets, medicines and supervision of medical personnel...
According to our record, and official figures from the Red Cross, Student Centre accepted 243 people. In the meantime some of them found place with their cousins, friends and other citizens that offered accommodation and significant number of affected people is located at Zenica military quarters. During these days new friendships were created and on the leave there were hugs, but tears also.
The life and work at Student Centre has started to normalize, postponed lectures at the University of Zenica again started and students are able to attend them regularly.
We are using this opportunity to wish people return to their homes as soon as possible, to congratulate our students and wish them to successfully complete the academic year.

- Establishment of cooperation with business sector
- New international exchange programmes
Within the first opportunity a project with companies Jumbo/Groenewegen and BME was especially emphasized. The project started on 1st February 2014 and will be implemented in the following 20 weeks. Specific task for students in this project will be to observe quality system, as well as the complete process of work in the companies they are accepted to. The final aim is to improve the work at companies and universities, as both sides will have the opportunity to learn something new.
On the topic of exchange through international programmes new opportunities of student mobility with the University of Vigo (Spain), University of Stuttgart (Germany) and University of Koper (Slovenia) were presented.
Students were also informed about the offer of Coimbra group of universities. The call for Scholarship for young researchers of the European neighbourhood is open until 31st March 2014, and candidates may apply on the website www.coimbra-group.eu/activities/scholarships
Even though students and professors from Bosnia and Herzegovina could participate in mobility programmes in the previous years, statistics is not encouraging, namely, the EU awarded 100 places and B&H used only 35. Today every public university in B&H may individually participate in the mobility programmes like Erasmus, Erasmus+ etc., which will hopefully increase student mobility.

| NEW WEBOMETRICS RANKING: DRASTIC FALL OF UNZE|
In the beginning of February Webometrics, one of the most famous world ranking lists, published a new list with innovated data for the last 6 months. As it was expected and as the UNZE management and Forum of Stakeholders warned, the University of Zenica faced the drastic fall on the list. Namely, the last rank on the position 3052 of the world’s universities (15% of the first ranked in the end of 2011) is seriously harmed now with the position 4784. UNZE is still in the top ranked (fourth among B&H universities) but it is much worse ranked than previous years.
Certainly, decline of motivation of employees, rigid attitude towards the UNZE, collapse of public education system in B&H, incompetency in decision making process and others are only some of the elements which led to such a situation at UNZE.
Let us mention only some of B&H universities where UNSA is on position 1739, UNTZ 4114, UNBL 5511, UNDŽBMO 7615, SVEMO 8226, UNBI 11541 and UES 12134.

Sabahudin Ekinović and it was attended by representatives of all BH public universities within the Tempus project Quality Assurance in PhD Studies (holder University of Heidelberg), HERE experts in B&H, deans, vice-deans, teaching staff and others from UNZE. Safet Brdarević (UNZE), prof.dr. Sabahudin Ekinović (UNZE), MSc. Dino Mujkić (WUS Austria), prof.dr Darko Petković (UNZE) and others. General conclusions of the discussion and introductory speakers could be summed up in the facts that PhD study should be primary scientific research and not education, it should not be a slave of solid curriculum but it should be shaped according to PhD students, ECTS system is not adapted to the third cycle, whole doctoral study is impossible to be realized in three years, mobility, involvement of more institutions in organization and internationalisation are essential features of this study, and there is still big problem in financial terms of organization of this study.

|NEW RANKING LISTS OF THE WORLD UNIVERSITIES:|
New ranking lists of the universities of the world are attached to this information. They are conducted once a year by the famous Shanghaii list and twice a year by Spanish Webometrics.
While Webometrics gives a list of 22 000 universities, Shnghaii list follows only top 500. According to that list, published on 15th August (the list is lead by the University Jiao Tong from Shangaii), the U.S. universities are dominant: among first 10, eight of them are American and two British, and among first 100, 53 of them are from the USA. Tenth time in a row the University of Harvard is the leader without competition. It is very important to mention that there are three universities from Balkans on the list: University of Belgrade on the position 457, University of Ljubljana 474, and University of Zagreb 492. Webometrics list, which is very important for us and which follows and publishes bigger list of universities, ranked the University of Zenica on the position 3152, which is great position if we take into consideration the size and years of existence of the university (within 15 % of ranked universities). |VISIT OF THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY DELEGATION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ZENICA: |
On Friday, 27thApril 2012, the University of Zenica was visited by a delegation of the Embassy of the United States, represented by Sunshine Ison attaché of culture, Aleksandra Popović – student advisor ahead of the Education USA and American Council, and Paša Lejlić . After the meeting with the rector prof.dr. Ekinović they had a presentation on the opportunities of studying and getting a scholarship in the USA. The presentation “Graduate Programs – Scholarships 101 can be seen here.
We will single out some facts from the presentation:
- everything that reduces total costs of attendence for international students, in broader sense, is considered to be a scholarship;
- concerning the basic requirements for getting a scholarship it is important to know that greater chance have:
- student of technical sciences compared to students of social sciences
- students applying for fall semester compared to those applying for spring;
- postgraduates compared to undergraduates, and doctorants compared to postgarduates;
- there is a greater chance to get a scholarship of a private university than public one;
The time for application is from November till March.
- Concerning the financial help there is difference between: Fellowships, Grants and Assistantships.
- Fellowships are offered at the beginning of postgraduate studies, and do not imply any work obligation towards the faculty, it is awarded at advanced level (for specific rsearch) and the annual amount is between 1000 and 15000 $(rarely over 20000), which is enough to cover life costs, and smometimes they cover tuition fees.
- Grants are awarded to students who work on special projects, the amount is about 3000 $ and covers everyday needs
- Assistantships are the best type of financial aid intended for assistants at faculties, who besides receiving a salary have the advantage that their tuition fee be“forgiven“ or do not have to pay a great part of it. They are obliged to work maximum twenty hours per week, and minding that there are various assistantships, it should be mentioned that the most popular are Teaching Assistanship-TA and Research Assistanship.
How to get assistantship status? You should find a university and a professor and contact him/her directly by e-mail. It is recommended that you emphasise the readiness for an interview.
Those who are interested in studying in the USA should carefully explore the options, apply to at least 5 universities and have good results on GRE or GMAT and TOEFL tests.
- Test GRE (Graduate Record Exam) can be taken three times a year in Sarajevo. The book for the preparation of the exam is available at the American Corner, the City Library in Zenica, and if other information is needed they should contact the Embassy in Sarajevo. Regardless the study they want to enrol students should pass this test, except those enrolling the Law or Economy.
- Test GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is taken by students who want to enrol the study of law or economy.
Test TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) can be taken three times a week in Sarajevo.
- Out of the programs financed by the US Government we emphasise Fulbright Student Program intended to students who have enrolled master or doctoral study, who need to do a research, and this program enables them the access to libraries. All costs are covered, which means that they are completely financially secure, even the costs of taking TOEFL test are covered for those selected by the Embassy after the second round of reading of received applications. According to the previous experiences the Commission in Washington usually confirms the selected candidates by the Commission in Sarajevo. Deadline for applications is 25 June 2012. The application is simple but three professor recommendations are needed.
- We want to emphasise a very interesting program E-Teacher, which offers online classes, and the only condition is internet access. Students get the password and user word and achieve direct communication with the appropriate university. The application for this program will soon be available on the site of the United States Embassy in Sarajevo.
We want to emphasise that students can find many scholarships available, and a good source of information is site www.educationUSA.info, but also www.educationusa.state.gov and www.ac-see.org.
